Eyelid Enhancement Surgery or Blepharoplasty is a procedure designed to reduce your sagging, droopy, puffy eyelid skin and restore it to a more youthful appearance. The procedure in the upper eyelid also helps reduce the amount of forehead muscle tightening thereby reducing wrinkles present above the brow area. Most patients are told they look “Refreshed” and more “Relaxed”. One patient told me that friends commented on how “Rested” she looked. As you look at our B&A photos in the photo gallery, you will notice the patients that have had eyelid surgery appear more rejuvenated.

The procedure involves removal of upper and lower eyelid skin, muscle, and fat to achieve the best results. The incisions are designed to be hidden in the natural creases of your eyelids, and thereby make the incision lines nearly undetectable as they heal. During the preop consultation evaluation of your lid position, tear production, and visual acuity will be made. A thorough history will also be taken, focusing on thyroid gland problems and any dry eye problems. If necessary, you may need to be seen and cleared by an opthalmologist prior to the procedure.

This procedure will help with firming the eyelids and restoring them to a more youthful position. This procedure will not completely reduce all the wrinkles in the eyelid skin. Laser peels will best accomplish this. Puffyness around the eyelids will be improved with the reduction of some of the fat. Dark circles around the eyelids will usually only minimally improve with this procedure. To improve dark circles, patients usually need a combination of sinus, allergy, and skin care specialists involved in their care. This procedure will not alleviate the need for a browlift, if the brow position is too low.

Eyelid surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under a mild sedation and local anesthesia. The patient is encouraged to take 5 days off, elevate the head when reclining, and perform no strenuous physical activity. We have found 1 pound bags of frozen peas to be the best ice pack for reducing bruising and swelling. These bags are applied throughout the week following surgery, along with the application of mild antibiotic ointment on the sutures. Liquid Tears eye drops are also helpful in reducing irritation and swelling to the eye. Although customarily not covered by insurance when performed for cosmetic reasons. It is up to the patient to check with his/her insurance carrier for information regarding the degree of coverage for eyelid surgery.
